ISO 50001 : 2018
Lower energy consumption, evidenced and repeatable
Energy Management System
ISO 50001 sets out the requirements for an energy management system. It gives energy-intensive organisations a structured way to measure consumption, identify where it is wasted, act on it and prove the improvement — which matters both to the cost base and to sustainability reporting.
How it works
You establish an energy baseline, identify significant energy uses, set measurable objectives and energy performance indicators, act on the opportunities, and verify the result against the baseline. Unlike a one-off energy audit, the standard requires that the cycle keeps running.
Who benefits most
- Manufacturing plants, foundries, textile and cement operations.
- Cold storage, data centres and other continuous-load facilities.
- Hospitals, hotels, malls and large commercial buildings.
- Any organisation reporting energy or emissions data to customers or regulators.
The 2018 revision
ISO 50001:2018 adopted the common high-level structure shared with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, strengthened the role of top management, and clarified how energy performance improvement must be demonstrated and normalised.
